Churchill - The Musical

The World Premiere of 'Churchill - The Musical' took place to a packed house at the Lagoa Auditorium in the Algarve, southern Portugal on Friday 1st of October 2010. The opening night was sold out before the tickets were even printed, and the after show response was unanimous in its praise with the audience using adjectives such as 'Fantastic', 'Brilliant', and 'Emotional'.

The on stage cast of 42 actors, singers and dancers starred Jonathan Reynolds as Winston Churchill, Sarah Pryde as Clemmie Churchill and Oliver Lanford as Percy (Winston's Aide). With 18 people backstage keeping the show moving, 289 costumes and uniforms brought from the UK, 57 specially made wigs also brought from the UK, 189 lighting changes created by top lighting designer Andy Chafer and custom built sets designed by Director Ray Jeffery - ‘Churchill - The Musical’ brought West End standards to the Algarve.

The build up to the show saw Press, TV and Radio reporters and journalists from seventeen different stations and publications holding interviews with the two writers - Trevor Holman (music and stage play) and Derek Charles Ash (lyrics and stage play). Audience members had travelled to the Algarve from 11 different countries including the UK, France, Holland, Spain, Brazil and the United States, including Musical Theatre Buffs, David and Abi Stutz who flew 7,000 miles from San Diego, California just to see the show, and to use David's own words after the opening night - 'It was worth every mile - the West End and Broadway had better be ready, there are new kids on the block!'

Described as an emotional roller-coaster, the show brought back a lot of memories for many of the audience, while at the same time giving an accurate historical insight into the life of Sir Winston Churchill and the Second World War for those fortunate enough to have been too young to have experienced it. The show also includes many lighter moments such as a glorious dinner party scene at Winston and Clemmie's home at Chartwell and also during an air raid when the locals are taking shelter in a London underground station.

One comment regularly coming from the audience was that this was a show with 'proper' tunes you could hum along to and there is a real eclectic mix of music. Nineteen new songs, with music from Trevor and lyrics by Derek help give an insight into both the public and private life of the man voted ‘The Greatest Briton to have ever lived’.

After the successful run in the Algarve the writers were invited to put on a showcase of the musical at the West End's Lyric Theatre on Shafstsbury Avenue in the heart of London.
The sellout crowd saw a fully reworked show with an all professional cast, and yet again 'Churchill - The Musical' received a five minute standing ovation.

Victory - The Musical

'Victory - The Musical' explores the lives of three of the most charismatic leaders the world has ever known - Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and Sir Arthur Wellesley, The Duke of Wellington. The show spans 25 years of European history and opens with the storming of the Bastille in Paris and concludes with the London based celebrations after the defeat of Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo.

During the course of the show we meet numerous world famous characters including Napoleon Bonaparte - the charismatic self- appointed Emperor of France, and his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais. We meet and get to know his arch nemesis Lord Horatio Nelson, Admiral of the British Royal Navy, and Nelson's mistress - Lady Emma Hamilton.

We also meet and get an insight into the mind and character of General Arthur Wellesley - the 1st Duke of Wellington. Other famous names from history we meet in the show include William Pitt the Younger - Great Britain's 26 year old Prime Minister during the French Revolution, the mad as a hatter and totally outrageous Marquis de Sade and the neurotic leader of the French Revolution Maximillian Robespierre.

'Victory - The Musical' is not however a musical history lesson or just a show about three military heroes. The story focuses on the beautiful, but very manipulative French wife of a senior British Naval officer working directly with Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, and over the course of the show we see how she manipulated all three of the world's greatest leaders of their time, and in doing so influenced the outcome of so many lives.

'Victory - The Musical' is a larger than life production primarily based in London and Paris, with action on land and at sea, and set in various locations around the world. Trevor's incredible music is symphonic in both approach and style with several beautiful love duets and a host of big harmonic chorus numbers performed by the large cast.

Derek's brilliant lyrics get straight to the heart of the matter with every song telling a story and moving it's listener to a variety of emotions. The show is about love and lust, courage and devotion, jealousy and hatred, adoration and passion, loyalty and betrayal.

With wonderful music and lyrics, both set inside a gripping story weaved amongst some of history's greatest characters, this show will have you sitting on the edge of your seat until you finally jump to your feet for the inevitable standing ovation at the end.

Blind Faith - The Musical

The plot of 'Blind Faith - The Musical' has in fact been available for everyone to read ever since Luke's second book 'The Acts of the Apostles' was officially included in the New Testament section of the Bible. Luke frequently travelled with Paul and he recorded his activities and adventures for everyone to read.

Without doubt Paul lived an exciting life in which he went from being the chief persecutor of the early church to becoming Christ's greatest ever apostle. Paul was there when Stephen became the first Christian martyr, he was blinded on the road to Damascus, was converted, had his sight restored and then spent the rest of his life travelling the world on missionary journeys with his friends. Everywhere Paul went he upset people by telling them things they really didn't want to hear, and consequently he frequently had to flee the area and make a run for it before the Jews managed to kill him.

He performed miracles in Jesus name including raising Eutychus from the dead, he met Kings, Roman governors, council leaders, church leaders, and without doubt he managed to upset them all. It would be fair to say that Paul was not the easiest of men to get on with, and yet the words he preached and the letters he wrote in the New Testament are read and studied to this day by approximately 2.2 billion Christians worldwide.

'Blind Faith - The Musical' does not preach, it is a musical show in the tradition of musical theatre, and it simply tells the incredible story of the life of the apostle Paul with a mixture of humour, great music, dancing and above all honesty in that the show is faithful to Luke's account in 'The Acts of the Apostle'.
